Well, the iPad 3 is undoubtedly coming out sometime early this 2012 year. Reports and rumors are swirling all over the place about what it will feature. Here at iPadAccessories.com we are most concerned with what the iPad 3 will look like, and what cases and covers will work for it! There have been some rumors that indicate the iPad 3 will be thinner than the current version and will feature advanced IGZO panels which will allow it to be thinner, have a sharper display, and consume less power. However, more persistent rumors seem to indicate that the iPad 3 will be slightly thicker by 1mm to accommodate an extra light bar to power the display. What does that mean for us case and cover fanatics? Will our old iPad cases be compatible?
According to a recent report from Macotakara.jp:
Because this production line has started, detailed form-factor of next iPad were flowed to accessory makers, then some company confirmed that cases which fits for iPad 2 without gap can’t fit for next iPad. Though this source told “front rounding corner will be same with current iPad, then Smart Cover will be good companion with new iPad macotakara”, magnets for fixing Smart Cover will be placed on different position.
So, if you’ve got a tight fitting case right now, you may be out of luck if the next iPad 3 ends up being thicker after all. However, the smart cover and all the smart cover clones out there should still work with the next generation iPad regardless of the size. If the iPad 3 ends up being thinner…well then that’s anybodies guess!
