Digital artists the wold over are excited about the iPad as a new way to sketch and paint on the go. Painting on the ipod touch and iphone has become a popular pastime. Recently an ipod finger painting was featured on the cover of the New Yorker. The ipad’s larger screen and enhanced processing power is enough to entice any digital artist attempt to ply their trade on this new touch sensitive screen.

However painting on the iPad with your fingers will only get you so far. Eventually you are going to need to get an iPad stylus to get the maximum level of detail desired. One of the best styluses out there for the iphone, ipod touch, and iPad is the Pogo Sketch Stylus by Ten One Design.

What makes the Pogo Stylus the best for painting on the iPad? There are cheaper styluses out there that will work with the touch sensitive screen, however, there are none that are as smooth and sturdy as this one. The latest generation of the Pogo has fixed all the problems with the last one. The slightest touch of the Pogo stylus is registered on the screen, making it relatively easy to paint with varying levels of pressure. Also it is very smooth with just the right amount of resistance as you drag it across the screen. The tip is a bit large and not nearly as fine as we’d like it to be, but it’s the best out at the moment.

The stylus itself is made from aluminum and is easy to grip. It is small enough in diameter that it doesn’t obscure the screen, but large enough so it is comfortable to hold. It’s an essential tool for any digital artist wanting to paint on the ipad or iphone.

Note: we say it is essential because frankly there’s nothing better on the market at the moment. The other styluses for the iPad and iPhone fall short of anything resembling an artists tool. And the wrapped sausage stick iphone meat stylus currently being used by many a South Korean just don’t do the trick either (although they provide a tasty distraction once frustration creeps in).

It would be excellent if an accessory maker released a real artist’s stylus for the iPad, one with a finer point that could offer a variety of strokes and pressures. However, until then, whether you are an artist or happen to wear gloves a lot while using the ipad… or perhaps you just hate getting fingerprints on your screen, the Pogo Sketch Stylus for iPad is simply the best way to go. We’ve included it on our top iPad stylus roundup.

I wrote a little something on this very subject:

I took it a bit further than the above post tho (which is really just a Pogo Sketch ad) in that I made comparisons between the Cintiq, Modbook and the potential that the iPad has as a digital art tool.

It’s true that the Pogo stylus s the best option on the market currently, but as it is, it just doesn’t cut it. It will work just fine for “messing around” but not for serious work. A stylus with a firmer and finer tip is strongly needed and will be more so once the iPad finds its way into the hands of artists looking for a digital sketchbook and portable digital workstation.

As a digital artist myself, I would have to agree with you. The Pogo Sketch is probably the best one I’ve found yet, but it’s still got a lot of room for improvement. It’s fun to use, and has a smaller fingerprint than my own fat fingers, so I think its quite useful for sketches, though it has it’s limitations.

I’m not sure why nobody has yet to make a finer point stylus for the ipad or iphone. Perhaps it has to do with the sensitivity of the device itself, but hopefully something will come out. You are right in your post as well, the modbook is by far the best tablet computer on the market at the moment for digital painting.
