It’s got a pleasantly thick metal cylinder chassis that is about five and a half inches long. It feels good in the hand, is balanced well, and is cool to the touch. There is a grippy surface towards the bottom to aid in grip as well for those long drawing sessions. The cap unscrews off the top and screws onto the bottom to securely keep it safe. There is also a power button and two shortcut keys which let you customize functions and features within apps. Overall, we’d say the design is pretty darn near perfect!

Additionally you get an extra pen tip, and a cool USB tooth that charges the stylus by screwing the bottom in. The only downside to that is that it’s not exactly convenient for those of us who have iMacs with vertical USB slots in the back of our machines… not only is it hard to reach, but it’s almost impossible to screw it in horizontally.

Are You Jot Ready?

As we mentioned, there are currently 15 “Jot Ready” drawing apps on the market which support the pressure sensitive features. However, even if you don’t have a “Jot Ready” app, the stylus still works like the normal Jot Pro. You can bet that more apps will be following suit very soon and adding the Jot SDK in. The pen is perfect, and over time the software will improve.

Drawing with the Jot Touch is dramatically better than drawing with a non pressure sensitive stylus.

You notice immediately the difference and realize that this is most clearly the stylus of the future. Be warned- once you go down this road, you’ll never want to look back!

Hard Candy Stylus Pen

Hard Candy also has a rather slick looking duel stylus available as well. The Hard Candy iPad Stylus looks a lot like those Space Pens that were so cool when we were kids. A cap slides off on either end to reveal either an iPad stylus point or an actual pen for writing on paper and stuff. Don’t get the two confused… The shiny pen looks good in any bag, and is pleasantly heavy and thick, so you can wrap your fingers around it and feel like you are actually holding something. The stylus tip is covered in a “silk tip, no-stutter” material that gives you “uninterrupted flow through any capacitative surface.” In practice it works pretty well, the screen registers the touch with minimal pressure, and it flows nice and evenly (even on screens that have a screen protector).

However, there are a few quirks with this pen. The smooth design looks great, but tends to be a little frustrating since half the time you are pulling off the wrong end. Wacom is a name that needs no introduction if you are a digital artist. Chances are, you grew up using their products and their tablets. Now With Magic Bristles?

The Nomad Brush literally is a dream come true. We’ve extensively tested it and are continually astounded at how well it works. The brush is very responsive, in seconds I found myself painting with smooth flowing strokes on the iPad like I never dreamed. The feel is just amazing, there is no resistance, no friction, just smooth, zen-like painting. Due to the iPad’s capacitative screen, it takes a little bit more pressure than a real brush, but you quickly get used to it. The bristles are made from natural fibers mixed with some sort of fancy conductive fibers which imitate a finger’s touch (though it could also be magic…). The only way I could tell the difference is by the color of the bristles as they have the same feel and flexibility as the natural ones.

The shaft is about 7.5 inches long, and the diameter is .25 inches and weights about .2 ounces. The shaft is made from a cool black material and is perfectly grippy but still smooth. It’s exactly the same size and weight as most of my other real brushes, and feels great in the hand. On the bristle end is a rubber holder that holds the bristles, this rubber end is perfect because it keeps the brush from sliding off the iPad when you set it down. The Nomad Brush is capped with a nice looking wooden piece that is branded with the logo. All in all, it’s a slick looking design that draws plenty of inquisitive looks when used in public.

The amount of accuracy and control the Nomad Brush offers is perfect. The smooth flowing feel makes painting on the iPad easier than ever. We chatted with the creator, and he has a few new prototypes in the works, namely a cap for the bristles so you can keep it safe when not in use, and also one that includes a standard iPad stylus as well for when you need pinpoint accuracy. These additions would turn an already amazing tool into something mind blowing.

The most recent version of the Nomad Brush features a shorter brush tip of about .4″ that is better suited for detail work on smaller screen devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch. Or if you want very precise control of your lines, and like to do tight detail work on the iPad, the short tipped Nomad Brush is very well suited for that as well. How Does The iPad Touch Screen Work?

First of all, let’s put to rest this “we want a fine tip iPad stylus” request that I’m sure we’ll get in the comments. The iPad is a different kind of touch sensitive device than say a Palm pilot. Most devices work with a resistive screen, meaning they essentially measure pressure. So when a fine point stylus presses on them, they measure the pressure in a pinpoint way. More accurate yes, however, this requires you to push down more heavily for your gestures to be registered. This is tiring, irritating, and just plain antiquated.

The iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch (and all track pads for that matter) use a capacitive screen which is much easier to use and only works with conductive materials. Basically it measures the electrical state in a given area, and touching it with a conductive material changes that state. If you’re interested, this is a very detailed explanation of exactly how the iPhone touch screen works. Since the iPad is designed to be used by the human finger, the iOS software in its current form cannot recognize a fine tip iPad stylus. It also has a hard time measuring pressure sensitivity. However, this all may be changing very soon since the leaders in iPad and iPhone stylus technology Pogo have recently cracked the iPad pressure sensitivity issue with a yet to be released app (this is very exciting to all the digital artists out there). Surprisingly, despite it’s “essential accessory” nature, your options for a good quality iPad stylus are quite limited. So, that leaves us with the question…

What Is The Best iPad Stylus?

This stylus has received mixed reviews, the materials used in its manufacture are good, however the large size makes it less attractive for many. It’s not an artist’s stylus by any means, however the thicker barrel makes it more easily gripped and used, and it’s also much harder for this stylus to fall in between the seat cushions and disappear for all eternity… For a large handed person or for anybody who has difficulty gripping the thin barrels of the other iPad styluses out there, then this is the best option for you. The BoxWave iPad Stylus retails for $18.95.

Samsung Instinct M800

This is a pretty cool looking stylus for the iPad made by Samsung. The brand speaks for itself, and can attest to the quality of the product. It’s a great general purpose stylus with a cool look to it. The Instinct stylus has a hand pocket clip and classy styling. Unfortunately, that’s where the good features stop for this stylus and it cannot in any way stack up to the Pogo. The tip of this pen is quite large and oversized, it also reportedly is not nearly as sensitive or smooth. Most complain that it doesn’t work consistently on the iPad or iPhone, and that they hardly ever use it. However, the price tag is a bit lower at just under $8. TouchTec Penz Multifunction iPad Stylus

Last in the lineup is the TouchTec Penz stylus. This is a multifunction stylus in that it is a ballpoint pen at one end, and an iPad stylus at the other. The ballpoint pen uses standard cross pen refills and writes on any paper surface… obviously. The other side is a relatively nice iPad stylus that has a thin profile and tracks easily on the iPad’s surface. Again, it’s simply not an artist’s pen, but for every day use this is a pretty good bet. If you are *extremely* short on space and can’t bear to have a separate pen and iPad stylus in your briefcase, bag, or portfolio, then the TouchTec Penz stylus is a classy solution. Cheap iPad Styluses

You’ll notice in this review that we didn’t include any of the super cheap iPad styluses out there that sell in three packs for under $2 and that sort of thing. We have had very bad experiences in the past with these sorts of styluses for the iPad with them leaving residue on the screens, falling apart, or even scratching the heck out of the glass and back. We are not fans of these sorts of cheap knockoffs and go for quality over quantity. Who knows though, maybe you’ll find one that works for you. However painting on the iPad with your fingers will only get you so far. Eventually you are going to need to get an iPad stylus to get the maximum level of detail desired. One of the best styluses out there for the iphone, ipod touch, and iPad is the Pogo Sketch Stylus by Ten One Design.

What makes the Pogo Stylus the best for painting on the iPad? There are cheaper styluses out there that will work with the touch sensitive screen, however, there are none that are as smooth and sturdy as this one. The latest generation of the Pogo has fixed all the problems with the last one. The slightest touch of the Pogo stylus is registered on the screen, making it relatively easy to paint with varying levels of pressure. Also it is very smooth with just the right amount of resistance as you drag it across the screen. The tip is a bit large and not nearly as fine as we’d like it to be, but it’s the best out at the moment.

The stylus itself is made from aluminum and is easy to grip. It is small enough in diameter that it doesn’t obscure the screen, but large enough so it is comfortable to hold. It’s an essential tool for any digital artist wanting to paint on the ipad or iphone.

Note: we say it is essential because frankly there’s nothing better on the market at the moment. The other styluses for the iPad and iPhone fall short of anything resembling an artists tool.
